Certificate in Congregational Faith Formation

Do you have a talented leader with a heart for faith formation that could use more education?

Does your part-time youth minister want to take faith formation to the next level?

Are you a rostered person looking to minister more completely with faith formation or how to empower others in this ministry?

Every day, more congregations are looking for leaders to develop & grow faith formation ministry. There is a shortage, however, of properly trained leaders available to these same congregations.

This program is designed to give faith formation leaders sound theological, theoretical and practical training in ministry for faith formation for young people and families. Anyone can benefit from this unique educational opportunity.

United Lutheran Seminary’s Certificate in Congregational Faith Formation is designed to equip you for building and leading faith formation programming in the congregation.

What is the Certificate in Congregational Faith Formation?

The 16-day course in congregational faith formation includes practical education emphasizing small groups, community development, and relational ministry. Topics include Biblical and theological training, cultural analysis, long range planning, family ministry, Christian Education and lots of how-to strategies.

The course is held over the fall and winter across 2 calendar years, and is designed for pastors, professional children and youth staff, volunteers, part-time leaders, anyone passionate for faith formation with children and youth! For some congregations it is an opportunity to “grow their own” leaders, combining the gifts of caring adults who have a heart for faith formation ministry.

What does it cost?

Tuition for the school is $2,500.00 and includes all resource, meal, & lodging expenses. Scholarships may be available. We encourage congregations to offer aid to support applicants.

The program is held on the Gettysburg campus of United Lutheran Seminary where participants concentrate on theological and theoretical study discussing ways they can grow their congregation’s faith formation, integrating families and communities into their programs. As a final project participants will develop a ministry plan for ministry in their setting. Emphasis is placed on integrating faith formation into the whole life of your congregation, using proven models and techniques, but with an eye on the specific needs of your congregation. A certification ceremony is held for all participants during the final weekend. Each weekend we begin at 8:00am Friday and finish Saturday at 5:00pm. We offer some flexibility if you have a conflict with a weekend date, just contact Chelle Huth to discuss.

Can I handle this?

Our alumni range in age from 20-70, and come from a variety of experience levels. Some have doctorates when they begin while some are high school grads. If you feel God is calling you to serve through faith formation in the church, you really want to apply.
